First Home Buyers Building Their Dream Home in Avalon Estate
For Rykiah Woolley and Elijah Weeks, building their first home was about more than just getting into the property market. It was about creating a home that felt like theirs from the very beginning.
As first home buyers, they had been weighing up their options and exploring whether to buy an existing home or build new. For Rykiah and Elijah, the experience from the first display home visit made a lasting impression.

“As we were first home builders and had a lower budget than most to ensure we received the grant, a lot of builders were not interested in talking to us.”

Rykiah and Elijah chose the Stradbroke 230, a functional home design that suited their budget, lifestyle and needs as first home builders.
After being shown a range of options, they worked through the process of elimination and decided the Stradbroke 230 was the right fit.
They also made a few important changes to make the home feel even more personalised.
Their custom changes included:
- removing the media room
- extending the alfresco area
- removing one of the garage access doors
- extending the walk-in pantry
The larger alfresco was especially important, giving them more space to enjoy time outdoors with their dogs and entertain family.
“A large outdoor area was imperative to us. We enjoy time outside with our dogs and having family over.”
Bringing Their Vision to Life
The colour selection process was another exciting stage of the journey.
Rykiah and Elijah already had a clear idea of what they wanted, and Katrina helped guide them through the selections process to bring their vision together.
“Katrina was very helpful and guided us through our selection process. We went in knowing what we wanted, and she helped us bring that vision to life!”
Throughout the process, they worked with several members of the Gemini Homes team, including Marnie, Katrina, Maddie and Bruce.
Each team member played an important role at different stages, from choosing land and finalising the house design, through to selections and construction.
“Marnie, Katrina, Maddie and Bruce were all very helpful throughout the different stages.”
A Standout Moment During the Build
One of the most memorable moments came during the practical completion inspection.
After months of planning, decision-making and watching the build come together, Rykiah and Elijah were finally able to walk through the finished home and see their selections, layout and design choices become real.
“It was amazing to finally see our selections, and the layout of the house come together. It was a real pinch me moment to think this is going to be ours soon enough!”
Handover Day
Handover day was filled with excitement, emotion and a few nerves.
After receiving the keys and taking photos with Bruce and Katrina, Rykiah and Elijah sat together on the living room floor and took it all in.
“We sat in our living room on the floor and just soaked it in. This is now ours!”
It was the moment their first home truly became their own.
Favourite Features
One of their favourite parts of the home is the raked ceiling, which opens up the main living area and creates a spacious, airy feel.
“The raked ceiling really opens up the whole living area. I would recommend anyone building a new home to see if they can have one in their build.”
They also love seeing all of their selections come together in everyday life.
“I also love all of our selections, seeing how they all mesh together in everyday life is the best!”
Life in Their New Home
Since moving in, Rykiah and Elijah say their new home has changed the way they live.
It has encouraged them to slow down, enjoy time together and appreciate the little things.
Their extended alfresco has become a favourite place to spend time with family, and they’ve already started adding their own personal touches, including a new vegetable garden.
“It has made us slow down and appreciate the little things so much more. We spend a lot of our time at home together, whether it’s enjoying the extended alfresco and spending time outside with our families, or just sitting and relaxing in our living room.”
For them, building their first home has created more than a place to live — it has created a lifestyle they can continue to grow into.
Their Advice to Other First Home Buyers
